Installing Claro iOS Apps on multiple iPads

You may have a large number of iOS users and want to give them all a Claro Software app – you want the equivalent of a site licence for iOS Apps. For example, you want every student in your school to have ClaroSpeak on their iPad. Buying the app individually for each iPad takes a long time and updates will require the users to know the AppStore password, which you may not want.

Instead you can use two Apple schemes to help you:

  • The Volume Purchase Program lets you buy lots of licences for a single app in one go.
  • The Apple Configurator program lets you administer lots of iPads and install the app you have purchased on all the iPads.

You will also need:

  • A Mac OSX machine (a desktop or laptop) to run the Apple Configurator program
  • A big USB hub (so you can plug in multiple iPads at once – so the more USB ports, the more iPads you can configure at once.)

Here is how it works:

  1. Your school/college/company signs up for the Volume Purchase Program and buys multiple copies of the app you want.
  2. You use install Apple Configurator from the Apple Mac App Store onto your Mac OSX machine.
  3. You plug your big USB hub into your Mac OSX machine.
  4. You plug up to 25 iPads/iPod Touches/iPhones into the hub, connecting them to the Mac OSX machine.
  5. You run Apple Configurator. This will let you install paid-for apps from Claro onto each iOS device. Each device you install the paid-for app onto uses up one of the copies you purchased using the Volume Purchase Program.

 

Citrix support

ClaroRead and other Claro Software products:

  • Are compatible with Citrix, Terminal Services and other standard network and Windows technologies.
  • Can be deployed and patched using Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI), ActiveDirectory, RemoteDesktop (RDP) and Citrix.
  • Have been deployed using Citrix successfully at customer sites.

Specific FAQs for system administrators

  • All our installers are Windows Installer MSIs. We create advertised shortcuts. There are no Custom Scripts in the MSIs and they comply with Microsoft guidelines, so they’re clean and simple to install.
  • Dependencies are all standard Microsoft items – Visual C++ runtimes and .Net frameworks and SAPI5.
  • We have an optional client-based update mechanism, but that is usually not appropriate for network installs.
  • We do not ship MSP patch updates, though we can do: generally we just provide the latest updated Windows Installer MSI to admins, which keeps things simpler for everyone.
    • Of course, this assumes that we have a commercially-agreed updates policy. Check with your Licence Manager.

Installing Claro software on your network

Customers owning a site licence or multi-user licence version of a Claro product are able to distribute that product over multiple computers. This could be done by visiting each computer with the installation DVD and manually installing the product. If the computers are connected on a network however it is possible to use Microsoft networking tools to distribute the software from a central location.

All Claro products use Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) files for installation. This means that standard Microsoft installation techniques can be used. For more information on the techniques please consult the following sections.

Claro products often come with high-quality synthesized speech voices: these sound great, but can eat up more disk space than you want. See the Voices section below.

Microsoft Windows support

Claro Software programs cannot work well on Microsoft Windows machines which are having technical problems. You should always keep your Windows installation updated and working smoothly. Only Microsoft-supported versions of Windows are supported by Claro (e.g. not Windows 2000).

If you are having problems here are some utilities that can help you:

AppLocale and ClaroRead in Arabic

ClaroRead for Arabic works perfectly on machines with Arabic Windows. However, some users prefer to run English Windows, and find that some of the ClaroRead user interface does not display properly as a result.

You can fix this with the free AppLocale tool from Microsoft. This tells Windows that ClaroRead is working in Arabic, and the parts of the user interface that did not display correctly will look perfect.

Installing AppLocale

AppLocale was designed for Windows XP so you can install it directly if you are using Windows XP:

AppLocale still works correctly in Windows Vista, 7 and 8 but installing it requires an elevated command prompt. Follow these instructions:

  1. Download AppLocale from the Microsoft website:

  2. Open the Start menu.
  3. Go to the Command Prompt shortcut (typing “command” is the easiest way to do this.)
  4. Right-click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select “Run as Administrator” from the dropdown list.
  5. Change to the folder where you saved AppLocale.msi (you do this by typing something like cd “c:\users\YourUsername\downloads” to go to the folder. That’s “cd”, then space, then the full path to the folder, surrounded by quotation marks if there is a space in the path.)
  6. Type “msiexec /I AppLocale.msi” to start the installation.

Using AppLocale

Having installed AppLocale you start it up from the Start menu and follow the instructions. A good walkthrough is provided by AppLocale: here are the specific settings for ClaroRead:

  • Run AppLocale, click Next.
  • Choose “Launch an Application”
  • Click “Browse” and select “ClaroRead.exe” from the “C:\Program Files (x86)\Claro Software\ClaroRead” folder (the exact path will depend on your version of ClaroRead and Windows.)
  • Click Next.
  • Select “Arabic” (in Arabic) from the list of languages.
  • Click Next.
  • Check “Create a shortcut to always run this application with AppLocale”
  • Type a good name like “ClaroRead Arabic”
  • Click Finish.

You should see ClaroRead launch, and you should now have a “ClaroRead Arabic” shortcut in your Start menu. You or the user can just click on the shortcut in future and ClaroRead will launch entirely in Arabic on your non-Arabic Windows machine.

Installation Issues

  • If you try to install from a download and get the message “… is not a valid Win32 application” then the download is incomplete. Download and retry – a full download installation can be over 250MB for ClaroRead Plus. If this does not work then try running Disk Cleanup (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools in Windows XP) on your main hard disk (usually C:) and making sure “Temporary Files” is checked.
  • As with all software Claro programs work best on updated computers with the latest Microsoft updates. Use Microsoft Windows Update to check your computer is up-to-date: you can select Windows Update from the Tools menu of Internet Explorer and the Microsoft website will guide you through any necessary updates.
  • Claro programs use Microsoft Office extensively: as well as Windows Update, use Microsoft Office Updates to update Office.
  • Try installing the latest Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Service Pack 6.
  • Anti-virus programs can cause problems with installation. If you cannot install a Claro program try disabling your anti-virus program and installing it again.
  • If installation is stopped for any reason before it completes you may find that your Claro software does not speak or does not work. Open Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall the Claro Product if it is there. Then try installing again.
  • If you receive the message A fatal error occurred during installation and/or the Windows Installer error code 1603 when trying to install Claro software then try Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 834484.
